Creative Chemistry 103 Tags!

Daolin Goh

I thoroughly enjoyed doing the class this round compared to the previous two classes and one of my favorite techniques mostly came from day 5 when they did alcohol inks on yupo which was an amazing gateway into the whole thing of painting with alcohol inks. Some of the tags as below.

In addition, I really did like the distress glaze resist technique and the offset stamping on the first day!

The class would be ending it's interactive run by 12th after which it would be available as a self-paced class but it is really worth the value to do the class still.

Till next time!

Midori, Fauxdori and the Junk Journal

Daolin Goh

Welcome everyone once again!

If you are following me on my Youtube channel, you would have noticed that I have changed my Youtube channel to Prism Craft Designs to match my blog but you can still search for me under Flamerick (because of how long it has been established, I'll still remain that to be my SEO friendly term).

One of the things that I'll be doing is to do educational craft videos to fill in the gaps within the crafting Youtube thing and also blogosphere while keeping myself up to speed with the trends going on in the industry.

So for the first series into my educational videos I will be talking about the Midori, Fauxdori and Junk Journal component.

The playlist is as below. Do continue to check back for more contents that will be added to that playlist! Til next time!

Made with Love Design Team Project 10

Daolin Goh

Sometimes, when uninspired, create inspiration! And that's what this week's project is all about.

I was scouring through my pinterest pins and then saw a picture of neatly arranged vintage items as a mood board. Then I remember where I've seen many of these: design and fashion magazines.

In short, they are neatly arranged objects (sometimes product placements) of thematically similar items that invoke a certain emotion, or express a certain message.

I really love vintage ephemeras and items. Therefore, this mood board is precisely inspired by those items.

Papers: Prima, Simple Stories
Embellishments: Tim Holtz, Prima

1) Keep them straight. Arrange things in a organised perpendicular manner. It is far easier to manipulate to achieve balance.
2) Forget symmetry. It would make the project tough to manage. Instead, focus on effective layerings and focal points instead.
3) Keep within the theme. That's what a mood board is. Keep both the colour and style variations of different elements to a minimum and that will ensure success.
4) Layer, layer, layer. Continue to maintain the modular nature of the focal points but don't forget to layer to break excessively separated elements: for instance, I used the brush to connect the top and bottom wooden panel and the layered the ephemera to connect the wooden panels to the stamped cloth image.

Thanks for reading, til next time!

Mixed Media Altered Mailbox - Made With Love Design Team Project 8

Daolin Goh

Altering large objects always feels like a HUGE task but one really can afford to be more "minimalist". In short, let the white space speak!

For this project I really just let the contrast take precedence (lucky me working with a white mail box!) I did not get a chance to do a video tutorial for this one but it really is quite simple.

Quick how-to:

1) Paint strategic areas with white gesso where the background will be made. Apply distress crayons of your choice onto those areas and really rub to spread out the color thinly only the surface.
2) Take a stencil and layover the colored areas. Use a semi-wet baby wipe and rub off the designs exposed.
3) Using die cuts (pine cone, tattered flowers from TH-Sizzix and the skeleton leaves from Prima), I made multiple focal points. Finally, embellish with buttons and paper cut out frames as if like a collage around the different focal points.
4) Don't overdo it, let the white space lay in contrast with the bright colors and let the focal point jump out to you!

New Creations for sale!

Daolin Goh

So I'm finally at the point where I'm comfortable selling some of the stuff I've made. Simply go to the shop tab on the top panel to go over and see them.

Something a tad more spring-like. I've also let the rub on remain without outlines for a more subtle look.

Something more summer-ly. *Hunky stamp alert at the top*

Vintage, Shabby chic, hardcover mini album.

Travel Mini. This is very fun I assure you.

Travel Mini. This is very fun I assure you.

For the mini albums, below is a video showing the product. As to shipping, we will try and work something out depending on where you are at. To be frank, because the items are made from paper, I very much prefer local sales just so I can ensure that it isn't damaged. Please go ahead though to leave a question in the contact me tab above regardless.

One Shabby vintage album and one travel mini album for sale on my blog. Please see the link below!

Playing with Distress Crayons

Daolin Goh

I *finally* got my hands on distress crayons after having played with some at a friends place where she shipped the product over! It's amaaaaaaaazing!! (As expected.)

Distress crayons are so good!!

Distress crayons are so good!!

One of the things really going for them is really the color palette. I will do a comparison with the other similar products to update my previous comparisons. Off the bat my review:

- The ability to use it with stencils is pure brilliance and it does not stain the substrate as much if the substrate is gesso-ed

- Distress color palettes! What's not to like!

-It uses up really fast! I want a larger stick!

Below is a mini mixed media canvas just to play with my scraps. So fun!

BasicGrey UrbanLuxe Collection Review

Daolin Goh

It should not be news by now that this will be BasicGrey's last offering into the papercrafting industry and they would not be focusing on their fabric and customised prints business.

So this makes this first review all the more bittersweet. One of the things about BasicGrey's designs is that while remaining trendy, they do make sure to do something different in terms of the design or the color palette. Urban Luxe is of no exception.

As with all complicated and saturated pattern paper, it is important to remember the following when making your scrapbook layouts or using it for craft.

Tips:
1) Alternate patterns of different sizes otherwise they may distract from the focal point as it may be too jarring
2) Select only a couple of monochromatic patterns of up to two different contrasting colors (e.g. blue and yellow) and build a layout around it and avoid other color schemes available in the collection (you don't have to be that ambitious!).
3) Give areas of white/black/neutral-color spaces to separate between the different complex patterns to allow them to lay side by side but not in direct contact with one another.

A review and some projects made with the BasicGrey Urban Luxe collection.

Mixed Media Watercolor Panel Made With Love Design Team Project 7

Daolin Goh

Sometimes, white space is the key to an effective layout.

The watercolor panel from Prima is also very good for creating watercolor backgrounds which would have been impossible to achieve such effects on a canvas.

A quick tutorial (sped up obviously) is below.

One thing I would highlight is the beautiful gold rub ons from Prima. They go down onto the surface extremely easily. They do not resist paints like some other brands of handrubs but it does take some open time for the pigment to dry on its surface so it should be removed promptly. The gold is also a yellow gold and not like a green gold which makes this very versatile in applications to both grunge/vintage colors or brights.
